Gokulnath Manivannan, 33, and his wife Ashwitha Jawahar, 27, parents of the three-month-old infant, were the only survivors of the crash, which killed their three-month-old son Aditya Vivaan and Manivannan’s parents, who had reached Canada for the family visit just two days before the accident, according to PTI.

The words of the grieving father are heart-breaking. “His small toys and clothes remain spread around our home, and we have no courage in us to even enter our home, which is filled with our only son’s memories,” Manivannan was quoted as saying.

The grandparents in the fatal accident in Canada’s Ontario were from Tamil Nadu.

“Heartfelt condolences on tragic loss of Indian nationals Mr Manivannan, Mrs Mahalakshmi and their grandchild in the Highway 401 collision,” the Consulate General of India in Toronto said on X.

The crash occurred last Monday (April 29) after a police chase that began with an alleged liquor store robbery in Bowmanville, Ontario.

Police pursued the suspect as he drove the car the wrong way on Highway 401, one of the country’s busiest highways, in Whitby, about 50 kilometres east of Toronto.

The collision involved at least six vehicles and claimed the lives of four individuals, including the robbery suspect.

“We are at a complete loss of words to describe the agony and vacuum in our hearts knowing we can never hold our child Aditya Vivaan, who gave us so many precious memories in such a short time, in our hands again,” Manivannan was quoted as saying by CBC News from Onatraio’s Special investigation Unit (SIU).

“His small toys and clothes remain spread around our home, and we have no courage in us to even enter our home which is filled with our only son’s memories,” the statement quoted him as saying.

The survivor said that his father, 60, had recently retired, and he was overjoyed that he could spend time with his grandson.

“My mother, aged 55, was eagerly anticipating every moment with her son and grandson, planning to make their stay all about her grandchild”, said Manivannan.

The survivor had confirmed the funeral arrangements in Markham and Toronto this week, reported PTI.

Last week, the Indian Consulate General identified the grandparents and assured their support to the surviving family members in “every possible way”.

The chase that took the lives of four, including a three-month-old grandchild, ended in a fatal collision that involved at least six vehicles.

The liquor store robbery suspect, a 21-year-old man, also died in the car crash.

The accident has raised questions about why police kept chasing the suspect when he was driving into oncoming traffic on the busiest highway in the country.

An investigation into the deadly crash remains underway, the SIU said, reported PTI.
