After Instagram, Threads might also see some algorithm changes – India Today

Instagram recently announced some algorithm changes that will boost creators of original content and penalise aggregators. These changes were introduced in a long blog post, that talked about them in detail. Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri had also talked about these changes in an Instagram post. Shortly after this, he took to Threads and shared the same post. Mosseri also added that for now, these changes are only applicable to Instagram. In future however, Threads might also get similar changes to its algorithm.

Mosseri, in a Threads post, talked about the algorithm changes of Instagram and wrote, ” Smaller creators historically haven’t gotten their fair share of reach on Instagram, and we want to change that. So we’re making some changes to how we rank recommendations to give smaller creators a better chance of breaking through. We are rolling this out slowly but hope smaller creators start to see the benefits over the coming months.” He then added that these changes apply only to Instagram for now and might also come to Threads in future.

“I should clarify this does not apply yet to Threads, but we’re exploring bringing some of these ideas to Threads ranking as well,” he wrote.

Coming to the algorithm changes that Instagram introduced recently, the social media platform announced that going forward, it will not only penalise aggregators (accounts that post copied content), but also boost original content so that it gets a fairer chance at reaching new audiences.

For instance, the platform’s algorithm for Reels, a popular feature for short-form video content, is being revamped to provide more equitable distribution amongst creators. Previously, Reels were primarily ranked based on engagement from an account’s followers, often resulting in larger accounts receiving the most reach. To rectify this, Instagram is introducing a new ranking system that exposes every eligible piece of content to a small audience, regardless of the account’s follower count. Hence, even smaller accounts might get a boost if people are interacting with it enough. As engagement grows, the algorithm will gradually expand the reach of top-performing Reels to wider audiences.

Instagram also expressed its intent to reward original content creators in its blog post. The company said that it will actively replace reposted Reels with the original clips in its recommendations. This means that when identical content is detected, only the original version will be recommended, with proper attribution to the creator. Additionally, reposted content will be labelled, linking back to the original creator, to ensure proper credit is given. However, significant alterations to reposted content, such as voice-overs or remixes, may still be eligible for recommendation.

Aggregators, on the other hand, will face issues. Instagram announced in the post that accounts that repeatedly share copied content will face penalties, including exclusion from recommendation surfaces across the platform. Aggregator accounts that post content from other users more than ten times in 30 days will lose visibility in recommendations, effectively limiting their reach. However, Instagram clarified that this policy does not apply to publishers with licencing agreements or explicit permission from content creators.
