Volcanic activity subsided Thursday in southwestern Iceland, the country’s meteorological office said, a day after a volcano spewed fiery streams of red lava that approached the town of Grindavik and prompted evacuations.

The volcano’s fifth eruption since December created a fissure more than two miles long and shot lava 165 feet into the sky. The nearby Blue Lagoon geothermal spa, popular with tourists, remained closed. Forecasters warned volcanic gas could pollute the air in the country’s capital, Reykjavik, about 30 miles to the north.
