2 minutes, 4 seconds Read

HMD Global is now focusing on its self-branded phones. The company is revealing its new smartphones in different parts of the world. Previously, we reported on the HMD smartphone for the U.S. market. Now, it’s time for Indian fans to rejoice as HMD is bringing its first smartphone to India. While details about the phone remain scarce, the unique fan-driven launch strategy behind it deserves attention. In this article, we will check out this strategy below.

HMD asked fans to name their phone

The company decided to choose a different approach for naming their first phone in India, as reported by NokiaMob. This was done for the obvious reasons: marketing. Fans gave different ideas, such as Knife, Tremor, and Indhumanoid. Some fans even gave the idea to name it after their favorite anime, such as Naruto. While, some of them chose a hilarious approach giving ideas like Sharpsy, Giggles, etc.

After a dozen suggestions from fans, the company finally chose the name for its phone. It was announced by Rajasthan Royals, which is an official partner for HMD in India. The name chosen for the first HMD phone in India is “Arrow.”

Gizchina News of the week

HMD Arrow seems like a decent name; it is not too bold like some of the fans recommended. After all, it will be a budget-oriented device as the company is focusing in the budget market for now. Apart from the name, the only other official detail is that the phone will be unveiled in a couple of weeks.

Will this marketing strategy work?

This strategy has undoubtedly generated more buzz for the upcoming phone than traditional methods would have. However, at the end of the day, customers will choose a phone that offers value. Hence, the company should not forget that it is launching a phone in a saturated market and needs to offer a good price-to-value ratio to succeed. That said, we will keep you updated whenever we have more information regarding the HMD Arrow.
